‘Women in Power’ project

‘Women in Power’ is a European project involving seven organizations from four countries, that aims to promote professional leadership and the empowerment of women working in traditional sectors through free online training available in several languages.

What is ‘Women in Power’?

Women in Power’ aims to become a tool to support equality and gender balance in European boards of directors, providing women working in the traditional sectors (footwear, textile and furniture) the opportunity to acquire skills and competencies that improve their sectoral and managerial skills, thus promoting gender equality and the advancement of women in the European society. ‘Women in Power’ also wants to facilitate participation and access to education through a free online training available in

several languages that will be specially designed to accommodate the training needs of a group of women who often have little secondary and tertiary education, but who have a deep knowledge about the industries in which they work. As women represent half of the global talent pool, it’s imperative that they should have the same opportunities to be at the forefront of the European economic and social scene. This will ensure that the best minds, without any gender distinction, are together addressing the challenges Europe faces.

The situation worsens in traditional industries, where only 18% of European women have executive roles in their companies

One in three working women in Europe feels disadvantaged in the workplace, believing that men are offered greater opportunities at work.

Women only represent 21% of board members of the 620 biggest companies in Europe

Women represent 1.8% of executives roles and 18.8% of nonexecutives positions in the European Union

Women account for just 2.8% of the presidents of the largest companies in each of the EU Member States

Why and for whom is ‘Women in Power’ relevant?

The expected impact as a result of this project’s outcome provides, which includes the consolidated training methodology developed by all the partners, will ultimately provide the development that women need in order to be empowered in furthering their career, also raising awareness on gender leadership education. The effect of this project is anticipated for women inside or outside the corporate mainstream, including entrepreneurs, academics, civil servants and senior women with professional service backgrounds.
The development of this project will assist in raising awareness with policy makers, stakeholders and general public of the issue through seminars and project dissemination in general

(press conferences, events, online materials and news), as well as give room for potential legislative solutions. It will also increase the number of people discussing the issue of women and leadership in relevant industries, as well as trainers’ awareness of needs of women education towards professional empowerment.
Civil society often leads the debate on the EU and sets the public discussion agenda. In this context, empowering women participation and leadership in the decision-making process will strengthen trust and commitment in democratic life, a more equal and inclusive society and the perception of European citizenship.
